a 3-hour introduction to word inquiry
Snapshots can always be arranged @yourschool.
Snapshot workshops cover an overview of the approach, introducing participants to the concept that in English spelling, meaning is prioritized over sound, making it far more regular than most of us imagine and with structures that are teachable. You will come away understanding how and why words such as <tractor> and <retract>, <sign> and <signify>, or <two> and <twilight> are related. The interrelationship between the history of words, their structure and their letter-sound links, is explored. Letters choices are governed by the history of the word and links with other words in the same family. Participants will also gain an understanding of the tools students use to assist them in their scientific investigations of words.
